Even though the weather has been good this past week, it’s time to leave Oslo behind and fly south to photograph the ESpanish Blues Festival. I am very excited to be working with the crew from ESBF in Madrid again! Last year I had a great time at the event, took photos, and shot videos of the performances. Great atmosphere usually goes hand in hand with difficult conditions for photography and that is also the case at the Big Mama Swing ballroom that will house the parties. It’s a good thing I have a fast lens because the ceiling above the dance floor is black so there is no chance to bounce light from my flash. As you can see in the picture above there is a super cool old billboard style informational panel going around the top of the room and it is backlit for great backgrounds in pictures.
The festival is organized by four friends who also just happen to be world class blues dance teachers: Alba, Gaston, Vicci, and Adamo. They are also fantastic dancers that have inspired me for years, and whom I have come to consider friends. I don't think it's a coincidence that they started to work together, all of them are great people.
The weekend is going to be action-packed: 10 teachers, 8 DJs and 4 live bands! I am very excited to take classes both from teachers I have learned from in the past, and teachers I have never seen dance before. Music-wise I have heard most of the bands and all of the DJs, and let me tell you: we are in for a very good time! Unfortunately Kristin and Mattias (pictured left) will not return this year, but Gothenburg is just around the corner from Oslo, so I'm not worried I won't see them again.
As always with great festivals I am most looking forward to fantastic dances with my friends from all over Europe. I have no doubt that this festival will once again connect me to exciting new people. Now all I need to do to make my weekend complete is to track down that fantastic Belgian beer store they had in Madrid....
